Apple is following suit of other big name companies and entering the healthcare field. Last month Amazon, Berkshire Hathaway, and JP Morgan announced that they were partnering to form a new company aimed at cutting healthcare cost for their employees. Early this month Apple announced that they are forming a group of healthcare practices for their employees and their families. Named AC Wellness these practices will initially serve the employees in Santa Clara County California with two clinics. The growth of the number of practices is expected as Apple has over 50,000 employees in the US.

This move reflects a larger trend seen in healthcare in the last few months. Big name tech companies like Apple, Amazon, and Uber are setting their sights on the burgeoning cost of healthcare in the United States. Google announced late last month that a subsidiary of their sister company Alphabet called Verily is moving into Population Health. Uber announced that they are entering the $3 billion-dollar business of healthcare transport. Using their rideshare technology Uber Health will transport patients to and from their doctor’s appointments.

These announcements are not expected to be the last of tech companies moving into the healthcare field. The companies involved overall size and the technologies they possess give them the opportunity to make waves in the healthcare field. What the result of such change in the market is yet to be known, but be assured that Strategic Healthcare Partners is on the forefront of new that affects our client’s practices.
